creativity for free

How about if artists didn't sell albums? They make music, they distribute it for free on their site and let the users do the marketing. And whenever a user embeds the song on their site/blog, an ad appears along with player (of course, an ad that is non-intrusive and as relevant as possible). advertiser gets clicks, artist gets popularity depending on the song's worth and on the word-of-mouth of the world wide web ok artists can still sell albums, but i bet you cant say that last sentence too fast :P

dont u think its a little unfair to the artists? I mean even if they do really well on the www and word of mouth how will they sustain themselves unless they make money?

well right now artists get promoted and get money through labels. HUGE labels. Companies which are already swelling with cash.

To answer the question - wouldn't the artist be bought if he's good enough? By people and labels eventually. At least we wont have a biggie at a label deciding which artists will make it to the market and which wont.
